The defined interference dimensions (outer diameter of the plain bearing / bore of the bearing housing) utilise the elastic deformation of the bearing to establish the interference fit (pre-tension). The bore must be carefully machined and provided with a press-fit chamfer. At elevated operating temperatures, the differing coefficients of thermal expansion of the materials (plain bearing / bearing housing) may result in increased interference dimensions.

In order not to exceed the permissible interference fit pressure in the bearing housing, transition fits are selected in this case. Adequate provisions must then be made to secure the bearing in position.
Bearing Installation
Plain bearings can be installed either by press-fitting or by sub-cooling with carbon dioxide (CO₂). A specially manufactured press-fitting mandrel can be supplied from the factory on an order-specific basis, to facilitate press-fitting and prevent damage to the plain bearing.
