Typical areas of application for thrust washers

Thrust washers from SL Gleitlagertechnik are used in a wide range of industrial applications where reliable absorption of axial forces and effective protection of adjacent components are required. They are used in the following industries, among others:

Specific and typical applications for our thrust washers are:

  • Bearing points with axial movement
  • Rotating shafts with axial stop
  • Swivel mechanisms with defined end position
  • Spacers for precise alignment of components

for precise bearings and high continuous loads

for robust, dirt-resistant, and durable solutions

for reliable operation under extreme operating conditions

When is the use of a thrust washer particularly useful?

Compared to designs without thrust washers, the use of this machine element offers a number of decisive advantages that have a direct impact on the reliability and cost-effectiveness of your system. Without a thrust washer, adjacent components must absorb the resulting axial forces directly, which often leads to uneven loading, higher friction, and accelerated wear.

A thrust washer absorbs these forces in a targeted manner and distributes them evenly over an optimized contact surface. This prevents point loads, protects sensitive components from overload, and maintains the precision of the entire assembly in the long term. The low friction coefficients not only reduce energy consumption, but also prevent excessive heating and material fatigue.

The result: a significantly extended service life for all components involved, fewer unplanned downtimes, and consistently high operational reliability, even under harsh environmental conditions in mechanical and plant engineering.

Practical examples from industry:

  • Swivel joints in excavator arms: Here, thrust washers prevent bearings from being damaged by the high axial forces during lifting and swiveling.

  • Pump drives in firefighting technology: The even load distribution protects seals and shaft bearings, even at permanently high speeds and changing loads.

  • Swivel mechanisms in packaging machines: Thrust washers secure the precise end position, reduce friction, and ensure a consistently high cycle rate.
